Legend has it that the term 420 was coined in 1971 by a group of kids in San Rafael High School who would meet after school at 4:20 to smoke, and the term 420 was used as code. The number was naturally converted into 4/20 as a date, and the rest is history.

The annual 420 Holiday, celebrating the love of marijuana, will be observed across the country on, or around, April 20th. The medical cannabis industry has started a new event to combine Earth Day with a celebration of marijuana and have called it the Deep Green Festival. It will be held on Saturday, April 23, at Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, California, and will showcase speakers, music, exhibits and workshops.

Promoters of Deep Green want to convey the fact that the medical marijuana industry is growing by leaps and bounds. The festival is intended to show how medical cannabis, jobs, health, ecology, the environment, and other important issues are all linked together. They say the use of medical Mary Jane is not intoxication, and they are not party animals. This new 420 festival will honor the "ways [marijuana] enhances wellness, spirituality, inspiration, and industry." In other words, they don't want to be called "Pot Heads" any more, and they are trying to break some of the old stigmas attached to pot smokers.

The annual 420 festival is usually associated with dreadlocks, reggae music, and outlandishness. This group is trying to portray weed as being something that is good for your mind, body and soul; quite a controversial thought in some mainstream societies. This could turn into a bit of a tempest with conservatives raining on their parade, crying foul at the people encouraging participation in an activity that is legal for some people, but illegal for others. Is this festival encouraging illegal activity? Is pot the new green, leafy vegetable?
