These possibly damaging waves originated from a massive earthquake that hit Japan last night.

Fugate says communities along the California coast are advising people to evacuate because of the difficulty to know how high the tsunami waves might be.

Crescent City in northern California should expect waves between 6 - 7 feet high.

Southern California beaches have been evacuated.

Surfers and swimmers have been told to get out of the water and stay off the beach because of potential hazardous currents.

The first effects of the tsunami should be felt between 8:30 and 8:45 Pacific time.

The City of Los Angeles has also closed all beaches.

Newport Elementary School in Newport Beach (Orange County) has been closed today because it's close to the coastline.

Boaters have also been told to leave their boats or sail three miles out from the shore for safety reasons.
