A tsunami warning was issued early today for the coast of Oregon.

Damaging waves could hit at approx. 7 a.m. and 7:30, the National Weather Service said. The timing of the waves may hit ranges from 7:15 a.m. at Charleston to 7:24 a.m. at Seaside.

A tsunami advisory is also in effect for the coast of Washington. That is a step below a warning.

A tsunami warning is also in effect for California to the north of Point Conception to the Washington border.

The last major tsunami to hit Oregon and Northern California was March 27, 1964 killing four children and 11 people in Crescent City, Calif. It was triggered by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake from Alaska.
