Facebook is planning to make an “awesome” announcement this afternoon at a news conference, triggering speculation that the social media network might be announcing a video-chat service powered by Skype.

According to TechCrunch Facebook is planning to launch a new video-chat product, powered by Skype, that works in a browser. It’s not clear whether the service would work only if you have Skype installed or if additional software would be required.

The site reports that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has sent out invitations to the Seattle news media asking them to join the company at its Seattle office for an event on July 6th. The announcement involves a new product that the Seattle team has been working on is all Zuckerberg would say about the news conference.

While many speculate about what is being announced, there seems to be some confusion over where the announcement will take place, with a blog at Forbes.com reporting that the news conference is being held today at Facebook’s company headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

TechCrunch reports that Facebook and Skype have been working together for a while, integrating various Facebook features into the Skype service.

Other speculation includes an announcement about a special application for the iPad or, in response to the criticism it received about social tagging for friends, perhaps a new twist on that function.
