TOKYO -- Japan was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 off its north-eastern coast Friday, it triggered a 4-metre (13-foot) tsunami that took cars and tore away buildings along the coast.
In other locations on Japan's coast, TV footage were showing severe flooding, with cars, boats and even buildings being carried by water.
Officials were trying to assess damage but had no immediate details.
The earthquake struck at 2:46 p.m. and was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude earthquake about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey says the strength of the first quake was magnitude 8.9.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has issued a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and also the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has also been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the state of Hawaii.
